Bedford Statues at Night : On the night that the 2009 Christmas lights were turned on, I wandered around a few of Bedfords landmark features to capture them at night with the unusual hustle of people instead in vacant streets. Of course, several people asked to appear in the images and so here they are! I did ask them to stand very still due to the one or two second exposure times so any fuzziness is not my doing - its them moving!

The new "faces" sculpture at the top of Silver Street is stunning in daylight but with the permanent uplighters even more so. I think it is a tad large for the setting but I still really like them :-) Well done its creator, Rick Kirby. The almost as recent sculpture near the Town Bridge commemorating the 1st generation Italians arriving here is also really nice but the location is not really fitting and there is no illumination. I hope this gets moved to a better location at some point.

ENJOY!

Fireworks -Wicksteed Park 2009 : Well done Wicksteed! A brilliant display and all for a measley £2.50 per person! That has to be the most bang for your buck anywhere - literally! The height and colours were great and the choreography with the music made the whole display a really big event. Capturing it was a bit of a challenge for the usual reasons. Where will the display be, how high, how big, how bright, are we close enough, are we too far away, what is coming next the list goes on! Love Mae was using the 40D with a wide angle lens and I was using the 5D2 with a longer lens, both tripod mounted of course. We were both shooting on the "bulb" setting so that we could judge when enough light had been absorbed. We were getting a good depth of field with F10 to F13 and the exposures vary between 4 and 10 seconds. I post edited one or two and added a little more interest to get the surreal feel. However, the moon really was in a lot of the shots. Anyway, enough words....enjoy the images :-)

Fireworks Milton Keynes 02-11-08 : Unfortunately the weather conditions were not favourable for a firework display as most detonations took place above low lying fog. However, this gave me the chance to try out a new post capture filter on the PC and this pulls out everything that the naked eye cannot see. Quite wacky but I like it. Especially the one where the crowd are in the foreground. A firework display with a difference - you can only see it when you get home! :-)

Fireworks - Bedford Rugby Club - 07-11-08 : Some images captured from the rear garden of my very good friend Phillipa (Thanks oodles P! Yummy food too!). The garden abuts the display arena and we were actually closer to the display than the massed crowd attending in the grounds of the event! There were lots of trees and some of the images include these in the foreground but other fireworks detonated high enough to capture them without foreground. All images captured at a maximum of 5 seconds exposure @ F10 (tripod mounted obviously). I cannot say exactly what the exposures were because, on many of them, I was using a black card to cover the lens before the shutter action had completed when some of the fireworks were brighter than others.

Post production using Photoshop, Photo Impact, CompuPic Pro and Canon Digital Photo Professional. Oh, and if you enjoy this sort of creative stuff, check out this website where you can find really cool artwork by a talented young illustrator :-)

Bedford River Christmas Fireworks 2008 : We decided upon a more distant vantage point for this display looking down the river. Things fell apart, quite literally, when we were setting up as one of the legs fell off the tripod! However, we mangaged to get it stable before the display began! We tried a new method of capturing the images. We used a laptop PC connected to the camera giving Love Mae a live view of what the camera saw via awesome Canon software. My role was direction and focus and Love Mae's was controlling the exposure time of each shot. A real team effort! All shots were taken at F11 with various exposure times between 2 and 10 seconds. Also in this gallery I am improvising a little with abstract creations generated from the original shots. The titles of each abstract are based upon what I see in them. Not sure if you can see it too or even something I missed! If so leave a comment! Above all....ENJOY!
